Warning lights

Engine warning light on — may I drive on?

If the engine warning light shows a steady amber, you can generally drive on carefully and book a workshop appointment soon. If it flashes, that indicates misfiring which can damage the catalytic converter — in that case you should stop promptly.

Steady and flashing are two different things

A steady light reports a stored fault in the engine or emissions management. That is to be taken seriously, but is rarely a reason to pull over at once. Flashing, by contrast, is the more urgent message: unburnt fuel is reaching the exhaust system and can destroy the catalytic converter.

Why clearing the code is no solution

The fault memory can be emptied in seconds and the light goes out. If nothing about the cause changes, the entry returns at the next check cycle. Clearing alone postpones the problem and loses the information that would have been needed for the diagnosis.

Why the fault code does not name the faulty part

Because the code describes which measured value lies outside the norm, not why. A reported lambda sensor fault can come from the sensor itself, equally from a leak in the exhaust path or a broken wire. Replacing purely by code often means replacing a working part.

What you can do until the appointment

Drive gently, avoid high revs and full loads. Note whether the way the engine runs changes, whether consumption rises or power is missing — such observations help narrow things down.

In brief

Common follow-up questions

What does a flashing engine warning light mean?

It indicates misfiring. Unburnt fuel reaches the exhaust system and can destroy the catalytic converter. Pull over somewhere safe and have it checked.

Can I clear the fault memory myself?

Technically yes, with a simple reader. But it only removes the message, not the cause — and you lose the stored freeze-frame data that helps the workshop in its search.

Will my car pass the inspection with the light on?

No. An active fault message in the emissions system leads to an objection at the emissions test.
