Vehicle inspection

Failed the vehicle inspection — what to do now

If your vehicle is rejected at the inspection with significant defects, you have one month to have them remedied and present the car for re-inspection. Only if the vehicle is classed as unroadworthy must you stop driving immediately.

The defect categories

The inspection report assigns each finding to a category. Minor defects mean: sticker issued, remedy is your responsibility. Significant defects mean: no sticker, re-inspection required. Dangerous defects mean the vehicle poses an immediate hazard — it is then taken out of service on the spot.

The deadline for the re-inspection

One month runs from the day of rejection. Anyone returning within that period gets a re-inspection covering only the items objected to. Anyone who lets the deadline pass pays for a full inspection all over again.

What to tackle first

Ask to be shown the objections on the vehicle. Much of what sounds alarming in the report is a matter of minutes — a blown bulb, a split gaiter, a worn track rod end. It only gets more involved when load-bearing parts or the braking system are affected.

Where to have the defects remedied

You are not tied to any particular workshop. It is practical if the remedy and the re-inspection take place under the same roof — then the second trip is unnecessary and nobody passes responsibility back and forth.

In brief

Common follow-up questions

May I still drive a rejected vehicle?

With significant defects, generally yes, but you should have them remedied promptly. If the vehicle has been classed as unroadworthy, you may not use it on the road.

How long do I have for the re-inspection?

One month from the day of rejection. After that a full inspection becomes due instead of the cheaper re-inspection.

Does the re-inspection have to be at the same testing station?

Sensibly yes, because the inspection report is held there. It is not mandatory.
