Why the air conditioning smells musty

A musty smell often comes from moisture and microorganisms on the evaporator, or from a dirty cabin filter. Professional cleaning and an appropriate filter replacement tackle the cause more effectively than a fragrance spray.

The essentials first

  1. Do not simply cover up smells.

  2. Replace the filter at the specified interval.

  3. Have the evaporator cleaned professionally.

Where the smell starts

Cooling creates condensation on the evaporator. Deposits and microorganisms can build up in this damp, dark environment.

When the system is switched on, the smell reaches the cabin through the air vents. This is a reason to arrange cleaning, especially for people with sensitive airways.

The filter and evaporator

A clogged cabin filter can make smells worse and restrict airflow. It is a service item and should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If the evaporator is contaminated, changing the filter alone is often insufficient. Cleaning needs to reach the actual source of the smell.

Professional cleaning

A workshop can inspect and clean the filter housing area, drains and evaporator. This also allows it to check that condensation drains away properly.

Fragranced products merely cover up odours. DIY attempts with aggressive chemicals can damage materials or impair the quality of the air entering the cabin.

Everyday prevention

Have the system serviced according to the manufacturer’s requirements. Regular use supports its operation outside the summer months too.

Shortly before reaching your destination, you can switch off the cooling function while leaving the blower running. This can help moisture dry out.

When cooling performance drops

An unpleasant smell and weak cooling do not necessarily have the same cause. A performance check examines air temperature, system pressures and possible leaks.

Refrigerant should be handled by trained personnel. It should not simply be topped up without investigating why the system has lost refrigerant.

Your checklist
  • Note the smell and cooling performance.
  • Check the filter replacement interval.
  • Avoid aggressive DIY cleaning chemicals.
  • Have the drain and evaporator inspected.
  • Service the system regularly.
